Arrested? Don’t Talk To Anyone But An Attorney.

Being arrested can be a frightening, frustrating and stressful experience. Most people do not know what to do next, how to protect their interests or what rights they have in confrontations with police. It is easy to get flustered even if you are educated in criminal law.

At our firm, we know nothing is more disheartening than when people make innocent mistakes that harm their own case or even result in jail time that could have been avoided. With over 25 years of practice as a defense attorney and former prosecutor, our founder, Brian J. Lockwood, has some advice about what to do – and not do – if you have been arrested.

Don’t make a mistake that could hurt your case. Day or night, email or call The Law Office of Brian J. Lockwood, LLC, in Mobile, Alabama, at 251-298-8554 for a consultation.

Your Name And ‘I Want A Lawyer’ Should Be The Only Things You Say

Contacting an attorney immediately is always the best way to protect your rights, your freedom and your future. When you become our client, our attorney can be at your side in every encounter with police, prosecutors and the court, so you don’t have to worry about making a mistake.

In the meantime, here are some words of advice:

  • DON’T talk to the police. Other than identifying information, like your name or address, you don’t have to tell the police anything. In fact, you shouldn’t. Nothing good ever comes from talking to the police without an attorney present.
  • DON’T lie to the police. When they do ask who you are, don’t give them a false name or make anything else up.
  • DON’T resist arrest. If the police want to arrest you, they will. Resisting could result in additional charges.
  • DON’T consent to a search. Make police officers obtain a search warrant based on probable cause, a procedure put in place to protect your rights.
  • DON’T take your case to social media. Never text, talk, post or tweet anything related to your case. Police and prosecutors will use any information they find against you.
  • DON’T take a polygraph or lie-detector test. Never, under any circumstances take a polygraph.
  • DON’T assume your charges are too minor for a lawyer’s help. Even a misdemeanor can affect your future, and you might be surprised at what a criminal defense attorney can do to help and how affordable it is.
